Plant Health and How to Protect your Crops from Weather and Disease with Dr. Gary Secor!

Plant Health and How to Protect your Crops from Weather and Disease with Dr. Gary Secor!
August 13, 2021 11:00 AM

America’s Land Auctioneer reminds us that land values are driven by fundamentals, not a one or even two year drought.  Fundamentals that drive land values are Interest Rates, Commodity Prices, and Risk Management (Crop Insurance).  The 2021 drought has been damaging to crops and forage throughout the western United States and starting to creep eastward into the Midwest. Still, land values remain strong, mostly driven by fundamentals.

America’s Land Auctioneer’s guest this week is Dr. Gary Secor.  Dr. Secor has been a Professor and Research Plant Pathologist for 43 years at North Dakota State University.  He earned his BS and MS degrees from Montana State University and a PHD in Plant Pathology  from the University of California, Davis.  He is a leading authority in the area of potato disease, disease management, biotechnology, and variety development.  Dr. Secor describes in detail how weather and other circumstances can affect the health of a plant and ultimately the yield of the crop.

Strategies for Surviving the Drought, with Rancher Jeff Scafer & Livestock Specialist, Lisa Pederson!

Strategies for Surviving the Drought, with Rancher Jeff Scafer & Livestock Specialist, Lisa Pederson!
August 06, 2021 11:00 AM

Kevin Pifer, America’s Land Auctioneer is joined by Jeff Scafer and Lisa Pederson.  Kevin addresses the volatile drought situation in North Dakota and the region and the affects it is having on production agriculture.  The sustained drought is taking its toll on American agriculture and causing less yields to crops and stress to livestock herds.

Jeff Scafer is in a two-year term as President of the North Dakota Stockmen’s Association.  Jeff is a 5th generation farmer and rancher in Wells County near New Rockford, North Dakota.   Jeff provides precision detail on the affects  the sustained drought is having on farmers and ranchers throughout North Dakota.

Lisa Pederson is a Livestock Specialist at the Central Grassland Research Extension Center in Steele, North Dakota.  Lisa describes the different strategies for cattle herd management during a drought. These strategies will mitigate potential harm to herd health and improve feed sources.  What’s more, Lisa explains why rainfall at this time will likely not significantly improve grazing land until next spring.
